Waste from Ukraine swarmed River Tisza – PHOTOS
Rainfall in the area of the reservoir of Upper-Tisza has led to a small flood wave in the Hungarian section of the River Tisza, said Gabriella Siklós, a spokeswoman for the National Water Management Agency, who reported about two purification operations to Index.
At the same time as the flood happened on Thursday afternoon, the monitoring service of the Upper-Tisza Regional Environment and Water Directorate – thanks to their installed camera system – indicated that the river carried municipal waste from Ukraine with an intensity of 20 pieces of waste every minute.
A further 6 mm of precipitation is expected in the area of the Upper-Tisza reservoir, which will cause a further rise in water levels, and the flooding is expected to carry more bottles and other waste down the river.
Unfortunately, similar things happen at the River Tisza quite frequently. Last December, the Tisza was cleaned of 10,000 tonnes of waste thanks to a newly developed dam.
The head of the Board of Directors for the disposal of waste had ordered a third-degree water quality damage control contingency on February 27th, starting from 2 pm. They removed the waste with the help of the available heavy machinery. On Thursday evening, the machines were set up in line, and some time later, bottles and other municipal waste had been removed from the river.
Water Directorate personnel will work day-and-night to clean the river if necessary.
Meanwhile, on 28 February, the cleaning of the forest at Tiszaszalka started. One of the most polluted forests in the Hungarian section of the River Tisza will be cleared of debris during the weekend. For the first time, more than fifty Ukrainian water specialists are participating in the action at the invitation of the Hungarian Upper-Tisza Regional Environment and Water Directorate.
We have some good news about the Tisza as well. As part of a new cycle track, the construction of a steel cycle bridge is expected to be finished soon. If you would like to have some adventure, you should go and try the cycle track around Lake Tisza during the summer. And thanks to the amazing determination of PET Kupa and many civilians, it will be as waste-free as possible.
PET Kupa members, civilians, and members of the Water Directorate take part in the cleaning process. The General Directorate of Water Management is assisting the action by providing a complete infrastructure, experts, and volunteers for remediation.
