Coronavirus – Operative board: No curfew planned in Hungary

The Hungarian government and the operative board coordinating the response to the novel coronavirus epidemic do not plan to introduce a curfew or place localities under partial lockdown, the head of the board’s emergency centre said.

The authorities will take measures to enforce home quarantine measures more effectively, however, Tibor Lakatos said.

So far, the authorities have ordered 3,065 homes into quarantine and checked compliance 8,293 times, Lakatos said.

Ignoring home quarantine instructions or otherwise disregarding the work of health-care workers and disaster management experts puts the effectiveness of the response at risk, Lakatos warned.

Meanwhile, Lakatos said goods are flowing freely in the country. Besides the crossing at Hegyeshalom, lorries from Austria are also allowed to enter the country at Rábafüzes, Rajka and Kopháza, he said.

Lorries in transit to other countries are only allowed to enter Hungary once the destination country has said it is ready to receive them to avoid people from infected areas getting stranded in the country, he said.

Lakatos noted that Slovakia and Hungary have agreed to allow commutes between the countries to workplaces within 30km of the border.
