Debrecen Airport basically shuts down due to coronavirus
Both Wizz Air and Lufthansa announced that all of their flights from Debrecen are cancelled until 31 March. Even though the airport is required to continue operating in case of emergency landings or military flights, they are basically closed down.
CEO of Debrecen International Airport Ltd. János Vajda told dehir.hu that they do not know when they will resume operation as it depends on the state of the epidemic. Legally, the airport is still allowed to operate flights, but only Hungarian citizens, people with Hungarian residence permits or close relatives of Hungarian citizens are permitted to enter Hungarian territory.
German airline Lufthansa and Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air cancel all their flights from Debrecen until the end of March.
Wizz Air ensures passengers that they will get their money back. 120% of their ticket prices will be transferred back to their WIZZ account, which they will be able to use for future flights within the next 24 months. In case someone would prefer a refund, 100% of the amount will be refunded, but this process takes much longer.
As reported earlier, Wizz Air has been cancelling many flights across Europe. CEO József Váradi believes that the whole European market will change due to the crisis. He thinks that Wizz Air will be able to stay above water due to their 1.3 billion HUF cash in hand.
Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport remains operational, but only Hungarians and holders of a residence permit may enter the country after passport control. Hungarians arriving from South Korea, Iran, Israel, China and Italy will continue to be screened on entry. Foreign travellers banned from entering the territory of Hungary must wait in the designated transit area. Budapest Airport is providing blankets, food, mineral water and a face mask to passengers in transit.
