Hungary signs applied research cooperation pact with German Fraunhofer Society

(MTI) – Hungary signed a letter of intent on Friday, which will pave the way for the opening of a new project centre in cooperation with the German Fraunhofer Society, in Berlin.

Under the agreement signed by the respective governments of Hungary and Germany, Budapest’s Technical University will work together with one of 60 Fraunhofer institutes, which excel in applied science.

The project will be carried out under the aegis of the Cloud for Europe research programme.

Zoltan Csefalvay, state secretary at the Economy Ministry, told MTI that the signing is a milestone in the cooperation with the Fraunhofer Society, as this is the third project centre to be opened in a joint effort in Germany. The “real goal” is to open a Fraunhofer institute in Hungary next year, he said. This will be a significant achievement, as the German society only has research institutes in Austria outside of its borders at the moment, Csefalvay said. He added that the work of the institute in applied research could greatly help the technical upgrades of Hungary’s small and medium-sized enterprises.

The agreement was signed at an innovation forum organised by the Hungarian embassy in Berlin, where seven Hungarian startups introduced themselves. The state secretary also presented Budapest’s regional start-up programme, dubbed Runway Budapest 2.0.2.0. The programme has been on a roadshow starting in London at the end of October, and is due in Stockholm and Copenhagen next year, he said.
