Coronavirus shakes the Hungarian sex industry too
Just like any other, the sex industry also took a hit due to the current coronavirus situation. People in the industry talk about an 80% loss in revenue. Many of them need to resort to working exclusively online.
24 interviewed a couple of industry workers to see how their work has been affected by the current coronavirus situation and the restrictions that come with it.
Even though all interviewees said that they keep on working, all women reported having suffered major financial losses over the past couple of weeks. They said that there was at least a 70-80% decrease in their income. The industry suffered the most in the countryside.
The government’s economic decisions do not affect them that much as most of them are not registered workers.
Even though they cannot afford to stop working, they try to pay extra attention to hygiene. Opinions differ on house calls. The workers’ approach to the situation is quite different. There are girls who are no longer willing to do house calls and only take clients in their own homes. There are other women who still do house calls if desired. Same goes for the number of clients they are willing to see in a day. There are women who are willing to take only one of their regulars per day, others did not adjust their routine.
Well-paying foreigners are obviously off-limits now, even for those who live close to the border.
Online sex is the alternative many girls have come to. The number of webcam and phone ads have gone up fast over the last couple of weeks. Most escort sites are highlighting these as temporary options during the pandemic.
If stricter restrictions are introduced by the government, online work will be the only option within the industry. Therefore, people are expecting an increase in demand for online sex as more people are infected by COVID-19.
