Drastic changes will happen in the traffic of Budapest?

The strictest rules will be accepted or declined by Gergely Karácsony, mayor of Budapest, tomorrow. 

Index reported that they would like to introduce significant changes in the speed limits on the streets and roads of the Hungarian capital city. On-road drivers would not be allowed to drive with 70 km/h, but only with 50 km/h and on other streets the limit would be 30 km/h. Due to the coronavirus-epidemic, Karácsony can decide on these changes by himself as a personal meeting with the other members of the Budapest council would be risky.

Overspeeding is the main problem nowadays to every significant capital and city alongside with the decreasing green areas and air polluting. The decision first needs to examine the opinion of Hungarian residents and to be fully prepared by the autumn of 2020. The actual introduction could only happen in 2021. 

The decision aims to decrease the number of fatal road accidents in Budapest, to reduce air pollution, to make the city’s natural environment greener, cleaner and less noisy, and to advertise the positive benefits of cycling and using public transportation.

Decreasing the speed limit would involve examining the major roads, streets and hubs of the capital and if necessary, to redesign them or to build new ones to help to ease the traffic of the city. Karácsony also would like to examine pedestrian crossings in the city and create more bus and cycling lines by reducing the space for cars. 

The major’s primary goal is to continue the construction of cycling zones and to make them safer, more comfortable and accessible among citizens.
