VG: Hungary’s public institutions far from being accessible
Budapest, December 12 (MTI) – Though public institutions in Hungary have spent nearly 20 billion forints (EUR 66m) in EU funds on changes to ensure wheelchair-accessibility, several hundred billion more would be needed to provide disabled people with access to all their services, the business daily Vilaggazdasag reported on Thursday.
The paper referred to data from the Human Resources Ministry, and said that healthcare institutions meet most accessibility criteria, while municipal governments meet some of them and cultural facilities have the most deficiencies.
Under European directives all public institutions should have been made fully accessible by end 2010. Relevant projects made 910 municipal and 159 state-run facilities, as well as 3,350 public services accessible across the country, the paper said. It added that 40 to 65 percent of Hungary’s institutions offered a smooth access to disabled people.
