Romania’s coronavirus cases exceed 70,000

Romania confirmed 1,087 novel coronavirus infections on Sunday, bringing the country’s cumulative number of confirmed cases to 70,461, ranking first among Central and Eastern European countries and seventh among European Union members.

Official statistics show that in the past 24 hours, the number of new confirmed cases remained over 1,000, though the number of tests was half the usual. Since the number of new cases first broke the 1,000 mark on July 22, it has remained high, except for two days when the figure dropped to three-digit.

The daily death toll was 37, raising the tally to 2,991,

said the Strategic Communication Group (GCS), the country’s official COVID-19 communication task force.

Meanwhile, the number of critically-ill patients reached 479, maintaining a daily high of above 400 since July-end.

Currently, Romania has 34,883 active cases and 32,587 recoveries.

The Romanian government decided late Friday to extend the state of alert by another 30 days from Aug. 16, in response to the increasingly severe epidemic situation in the country. Details HERE.

This was the third time that the government extended the state of alert which first started in mid-May, following the end of a two-month higher-level state of emergency.

Under the current regulations, mask-wearing is now mandatory in indoor and crowded open-air public places.

In addition, indoor activities in the catering sector, cinemas and theaters are still suspended.

The epidemic has rebounded sharply in Romania since mid-June, when the average daily cases were around 200.
