Budapest taxi drivers relaunch protest against Uber-update
Budapest, March 10 (MTI) – Small groups of taxi drivers relaunched protests against car dispatcher Uber in central Budapest on Thursday morning.
An MTI correspondent spotted 15 cars gathering for a protest at Heroes’ Square. The organisers said that the drivers were planning to split into four groups, each of them heading to different parts of the city.
One group will head to the headquarters of the Budapest Transport Centre, another to the National Transport Authority, the third group will submit a petition against Uber to the US Embassy, while the fourth group will head to the Development Ministry where it too will submit a petition, they said.
The taxi drivers were planning to continue the demonstration at 11am at Deák Square where they intended to block a lane of traffic.
Taxi drivers held a four-day protest in January demanding fair conditions on the passenger transport market with the same rules applying to Uber and taxi drivers.
UPDATE
Taxi drivers blocked a parking lane, a bus lane and a bicycle lane at Deák square with 18 cars to demand stricter enforcement of the passenger transport sector rules that were changed earlier this year to create fairer market conditions for taxi drivers.
The taxi drivers have been granted permission to protest until 8pm on Friday but they have not ruled out extending the demonstration.
