Hungarian Academy of Science may close down research reactor
Budapest, March 11 (MTI) – The Hungarian Academy of Sciences may be forced to close down its small nuclear research facility in Budapest because it lacks the funding to replace its fuel rods, business daily Vilaggázdasag reported on Friday.
The supplier, Russia’s Tvel, has hiked the price of the rods twenty-fold over the past fifteen years and now it approaches market prices. The 222 fuel rods needed would cost around 3.7 billion forints (EUR 12m) to replace, based on last year’s price, head of the Academy’s energy research institute told the paper.
