Charges dropped against policemen allegedly attacking UAE chess official

Budapest, March 23 (MTI) – A southern Hungary court on Wednesday dropped charges of serious violence against two policemen who had been suspected of attacking a chess official from the United Arab Emirates in June 2012.

The court ruled that one of the policemen, who has since left the force, and a taxi driver who helped him arrest Saud Mohammed Al Marzooqi and a companion were guilty of dangerous driving, however. The policeman was fined 264,000 forints and the taxi driver was given two years parole.

The court established that the two policemen were on patrol looking for illegal migrants and mistakenly thought that the two arab men were border violators. The men, on the other hand, thought that they were being robbed and tried to escape.

Al Marzooqi said his way had been blocked by a taxi, while the policemen pushed him to the ground, beating and kicking him.

The judge ruled, however, that it was impossible to prove that he was assaulted in any way. His broken ribs and other injuries could not have resulted from the incident that he described, he said.

An appeal has been submitted against the ruling.
