Parliament rolls back Sunday shopping restrictions
Budapest, April 12 (MTI) – Hungarian lawmakers voted on Tuesday to repeal a law prohibiting retailers over 200sqm from opening on Sundays.
The law, which had been in force for a little longer than a year, was repealed with 163 votes in favour, two against and 11 abstentions.
Cabinet chief Antal Rogán submitted the bill rolling back the restrictions with Economy Minister Mihály Varga a day earlier. The bill’s authors said the restrictions remain a “divisive” issue in spite of achieving policy goals.
The decision to lift the restrictions was welcomed by most business associations, though a local retail workers union complained of a lack of consultation.
