Human resources ministry: Number of resident doctors doubles in five years

Budapest, April 17 (MTI) – The number of young doctors starting a career in Hungary has doubled over the past five years due in large part to the government’s grant scheme, a state secretary of the human resources ministry said on Sunday.

Committed to keeping young doctors at home, the government has spent 5 billion forints (EUR 16m) on grants to support career-starters in obtaining a special qualification under the Resident Doctors’ Support Scheme since 2011, Bence Rétvári told MTI.

Under the programme young doctors may receive a net amount of 100,000 forints, or 150,000 or up to 200,000 forints per month in a grant, he said.

While the number of young doctors starting a career at home was only 420 five years ago, it went up to 917 by the beginning of 2016, said Retvari.

He said that during the same period fewer Hungarian doctors were seeking employment abroad with their numbers dropping from 845 to 492.
