Left-wing petition against Hungary garners only a few thousand signatures
Budapest, May 11 (MTI) – A petition launched by the left-wing European Humanist Federation (EHF) seeking to initiate a European Union procedure against Hungary for the violation of democratic values has garnered only a few thousand signatures, daily Magyar IdÅ‘k said on Wednesday.
The EHF civil initiative was registered by the European Commission at the end of last November and the EHF has one year to collect one million signatures in order to have the EU procedure launched against Hungary.
According to Magyar IdÅ‘k’s information, the EHF has collected fewer than 10,000 signatures but no precise figure is available. An EHF spokesman refused to reveal the number to the paper and the commission has also declined to do so, the paper said.
At least 1 million citizens from seven member states must show support in order for a Europe civil initiative to be launched.
MEP György Schöpflin told the paper that the EHF petition was a political issue and the organisation wants to embarrass Hungary.
