Hungary’s most memorable moments from this summer

This summer brought us Hungarians and anyone following what was happening in the country countless memorable moments we will never forget.

After a horrible year filled with quarantine, anxiety, and stress due to the pandemic, the summer of 2021 was somewhat of a free period in Hungary.

Even though students could not have the liberating feeling of leaving the school building behind for almost three months, the holidays kickstarted in June. In just a matter of days, the EURO2020 began, with four games held in Budapest in the Puskás Arena.

On the game days when the best of Europe arrived in Budapest, tens of thousands of supporters filled the streets, mostly extremely excited Hungarians.

European football fans set an example in the Hungarian capital and showed the world how we are supposed to cheer for our favourites and for the beautiful game.

Football was still the hottest topic in town when Prime Minister Viktor Orbán dropped the bomb everyone has been waiting for:

we could get rid of masks on July 3.

It does not mean, however, that they are gone for good. There is a chance of a possible fourth wave hitting the country in the autumn. Nevertheless, we are hoping for the best.

Fourth covid wave? Just how well prepared is Hungary?

At the end of the month, at the largest all-arts festival in the country, Művészetek Völgye – The Valley of Arts, we already enjoyed free of masks the atmosphere, the crowd, the concerts, and everything that is Art. Check out this lovely video on YouTube, summarising the essence of the friendly yet huge, 10-day-long festival.

Just a day after the 30th festival of the Művészetek Völgye started, the summer Olympics of 2020 in Tokyo also set off. More precisely, the athletes embarked on their journey with their hopes of standing on the highest step of the podium. Some of them achieved this goal, while others set their personal best, despite not arriving first. Whatever their ranking and the number of their medals may be,

huge congratulations to all Hungarian athletes (and to all other nationalities, of course) for making us proud

after having trained for a year in strange covid circumstances.

After sacrificing June and July for sports, it was time to focus on music. One of the best places to do so in the summer is Veszprém.

The premium music festival of VeszprémFest, the Rozé, Rizling and Jazz Days, and the Street Music Festival of Veszprém attracted people from the whole country.

The latter presents the future generation of musicians. I do not think that the Rozé, Rizling and Jazz Days festival needs any further explanation. VeszprémFest has been one of the biggest music festivals outside of Budapest that brings many popular names from all around the world, year by year. The biggest name this year was, without a doubt, Tom Jones. He visited Hungary once again after his performance in 2017 at the same festival.

Towards the end of August,

the country saw the biggest August 20 celebration of Hungary’s history.

The three-day-long festival surprised the crowds with many of its elements. Starting with the somewhat strange parade on Andrássy Avenue, followed by the biggest and most expensive fireworks the same evening. Here you can check out the most memorable moments of that weekend.

Although it is not over yet, the Tokyo Paralympics Games also needs to make it onto the list. There is still almost a week left, but the Hungarian team already has seven medals. The country has not had this many golds since the Sydney Paralympics in 2000.

Huge Hungarian success at the Paralympics

Let’s hope that the next summer will be even better, bigger, happier, and freer.
