Fidesz expects Mesterhazy’s apology for harsh slogan shouted at party congress
Budapest, January 27 (MTI) – The Fidesz party expects an apology from Socialist leader Attila Mesterhazy for not protesting against a harsh slogan shouted during the party’s weekend congress, the ruling party’s communications director told a press conference on today.
Mate Kocsis made reference to an “insult” congress participants shouted during Mesterhazy’s speech at the congress held on Saturday and attended by leaders of parties of the left electoral alliance.
The online edition of daily Magyar Nemzet said on Sunday that Mesterhazy made comments about Lorinc Meszaros, the mayor of Felcsut, calling him “Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s procurator, who has multiplied his company’s revenues five times over the past three years and today ranks as the 88th richest Hungarian.”
As Mesterhazy described Meszaros’ as “a serious achievement that deserves a university professor’s post, the online report said participants shouted the word “rope,” suggesting that the mayor would deserve that instead. The word “rope” was clearly heard by several journalists, mno.hu said.
It added that instead of distancing himself from the slogan, Mesterhazy continued his address as saying that “I believe there is going to be not a professor’s podium, but the other thing we have just heard.”
Mesterhazy on Sunday told commercial broadcaster ATV that the word “prison” and not the word “rope” was shouted at a congress, insisting that he in his speech referred to justice required to be made in a state governed by the rule of law and the responsibility of all to abide by the law. That include “Viktor Orban and Lorinc Meszaros as well,” he said.
Kocsis said that a prime minister candidate such as Mesterhazy must have rejected an insult “offering the rope to a political opponent” rather than approving it.
He accused Mesterhazy of lying when he denied what happened and called on the opposition leader to admit the truth and extend an apology to Hungarians.
