This will be the most beautiful tramline in Budapest!
The revised plans for the southern expansion of the interweaving tram network in Buda were presented on Thursday. According to the detailed plans of the 2.8-kilometre-long tram line connecting St. Gellért Square and Budafoki Street, the reconstruction will enrich the capital with more promenades and cycle lanes.
The government decided one and a half years ago to expand the interweaving tram network in Buda to the south. There will be seven stops in both directions on the tram line connecting St. Gellért Square, the quay in front of the Technical University, the Buda end of Petőfi Bridge, Pázmány Péter Promenade, the Buda end of Rákóczi Bridge, Nádorkert Railway Station, and the intersection of Budafoki Street and Dombóvári Street.
According to the plans, Tram 18 and 48 will reach St. Gellért Square from Budafoki Street in 9 minutes, intertwined with 8 trams per hour between Tram 47 and 49 and with 4 trams per hour between Tram 41 and 19, adds Telex. The construction of the tram line is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2022, and it will end in the second quarter of 2024.
Making Budapest greener
This development will significantly change the image of the Danube bank between Liberty Bridge and Rákóczi Bridge. The aim is to provide more space for public transport, pedestrians, cyclists, and trees on the route that is currently dominated by cars, writes Dávid Vitézy, the CEO of the Budapest Development Agency, on his Facebook page.
As part of Budapest’s increasing green efforts, more than half of the tram track (1.6 kilometres) will be lined with grass.
Vitézy explained that a total of 196 trees will need to be felled for construction purposes and for other phytosanitary or safety reasons. However,
200 trees and shrubs covering an area of 4,600 square metres will be planted along the tram tracks.
The area covered with grass will be expanded to 10,400 square metres.
The quay in front of the Technical University
Within the framework of the investment, a new cycle route will be built both along the quay and Pázmány Péter Promenade. In addition,
a quality urban space with trees, bicycle racks, and street furniture will be created in front of the main building of the Technical University, leading directly to the Danube,
explains Balázs Fürjes, Minister of State for Budapest and the Development of the Capital’s Metropolitan Area. With these developments, the quay in front of the Technical University will become much greener and more representative.
