Check out the “Bejgli” and “Szaloncukor” of the year
Over the course of the year, we found out earlier what the Ice Cream of the Year is and what the Cake of Hungary is. As the Christmas period approaches, the Hungarian Confectionery Industry Association chose Bejgli of the Year and Szaloncukor of the Year, too. The aim of the competition is to promote Hungarian products made from excellent Hungarian ingredients.
The Bejgli of the Year
Last year, Hungary held the Bejgli of the Year competition for the first time. The aim of the competition is to raise awareness and promote Hungarian products. This year, bejglis could be entered in three categories. Applicants were categorised as ‘traditional walnut’, ‘traditional poppy seed’, and ‘gourmet’. This year, a total of 56 bejglis competed. A professional jury of well-known people and authorities tasted and evaluated, writes travelo.hu.
The gourmet category also included pistachio, hazelnut, cashew, marzipan, prunes, and pear flavours. The jury even tasted pine nuts, pumpkin, mango and red wine flavoured bejgli.
The Pearl of Advent is the Bejgli of the Year!
In the product of Ildikó Confectionery, there is almond buttercream, Irsai brandy, cranberries, and even sesame seeds. In the traditional poppy seed category, Péter Szurgent and Szurgent Handicraft Ice Cream Parlor and Confectionery won the gold medal, while in the traditional walnut category, Andrea Simon, a representative of the Trattoria di Sophia confectionery, won the gold medal.
Szaloncukor of the Year
Not only the Bejgli of the Year but also the Szaloncukor of the Year was chosen. In 2021, the jury had a harder job, as they had to choose from 152 szaloncukor. In the announcement of the results, we learned that quality is the most important thing for most people today. However, szaloncukors are becoming more expensive year after year, mainly due to inflation. Two-thirds of the szaloncukor consumed are jelly flavoured. In this year’s competition, there were 9 categories, writes sokszinüvidek.hu.
A Mouthful of Heaven is the Szaloncukor of the Year.
Szaloncukor of the Year:
- A Mouthful of Heaven (Sulyán Confectionery)
- Jamaican Black Coconut White Chocolate Szaloncukor (Demeter Chocolate)
- White Chocolate Szaloncukor filled with pistachio cream (Stühmer)
For the sugar-free szaloncukor of the year, Stühmer had a peanut cream taste, while the best handcrafted Szaloncukor was deemed to be the white chocolate truffle of Sulyán Confectionery. Last year, Erős Pista was a great success. The even spicier Haragos Pista flavour is now available this year!
