Hungary is one of the longest-standing countries in Europe and with those years come many historical buildings. Some of them are more famous than others, for example the Chain Bridge or Buda Castle, but there are some small castles and mansions around the country that await their new owner.
Ingatlan.com is one of the oldest Hungarian websites and they deemed it their duty to help people find the perfect home of their lives. In order to help customers with their decision, the website aims to gather all available offers from all real estate agencies in Hungary.
In a recent article, Ingatlan.com has compiled a list of fascinating Hungarian mansions and small castles that could be yours, so you can truly live like a king or queen, Hungarian style.

The Mansion is located at the border of Pest and Nógrád counties in Vanyarc in Northern-Hungary, it has almost three hectares worth of land fully enclosed with fences and with its own forest, the website says. The description also highlights that it is bordering a hunting area.

Located 50 kilometres from Pozsony and 100 kilometres from Bécs, the castle is easily accessible internationally due to the proximity of airports. This demesne, or majorság in Hungarian, must have been built at the beginning of the 18th century or even earlier.
Between the end of the 1970s and 1999, it was abandoned and neglected. Since then it has been partially reconstructed, but according to the description, there is still room for improvement. The land also houses a Hungarian shadoof and a horse stable.

Ingatlan.com writes that it also has a card room, which was frequently visited by János Kádár, General Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Worker’s Party between 1956 and 1988.

The listing says that this one-storey, fully renovated castle has an L-shaped veranda, as well as a large maturing cellar, which is 23 metres long and 5-6 metres wide. You can fit plenty of barrels and racks of bottles of fine wine in there. They also built a 109 m2 building capable of hosting wine tastings for 20 people.

This mesmerising castle is situated only about 40 kilometres from Siófok, close to Balaton in Tolna county’s Tamási. The close proximity makes the trip to the beautiful tourist destination an easy drive.
The listing highlights that the property is located just 100 metres away from the town’s famous thermal bath and there are several small lakes around the area ideal for fishing enthusiasts. They also added that there is a peaceful inner garden enclosed by trees. Built according to 18th-century architecture, most rooms open from one another. In no way can the Veres Pálné Maria building be called a castle, likewise the Tarca building. Houses, yes, castles no. The accepted definition of a castle is the following: ‘A castle is a type of fortified structure built during the Middle Ages predominantly by the nobility or royalty and by military orders. Scholars debate the scope of the word castle, but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble.’

In Scotland, which has an extraordinary number of castles (real ones, unlike some of the above) given the size of the country, there are quite a few owned by women. But hey, don’t let a casual bit of sexism get in the way of a tired old cliché.

Dear Eleanor, @TM means that my comment was a response to TM. It is how we respond to other commentators directly in the English speaking world, I was not commenting upon the editorial in this instance. My comment under the name Pevsner (as in Nikolaus Pevsner, a world renowned architectural historian) was the comment that was critical of the editorial due it inaccurately calling humdrum houses ‘castles’ – a point picked up by commentator Peterzons. The DNH has a lot to learn, it seems.

One of my favourite castles is Castle Goring, owned by Lady Collin Campbell. I watch her YouTube offerings every other evening (here in N S Canada) along with Neil Sean’s and that of “just chattin Sue Me” and “River YouTube royals” who is such a charming young man who has impeccable language skills, as does Lady C. In all of these there are background photos of castles and their owners and life issues. I am planning to move back home to Hungary in 4 years and also to spend at least 6 months on England & Scotland. So I am immersing myself in the cultures. I don’t want to be one of those tourists who comment on things that I only have extremely superficial background info on.
I also like a few of the above architecture….would do them up very differently though. There is only 1 that I could afford to pay cash for so I will not put forth any offers. I’d love a nice small church to do over though since building, renovating is how I have employed myself. A real castle needs a large staff just like any company since we no loner have serfs in society. One can dream of a big lotto win though.
