Looking for one last drink/dance/bite? Depending on where you are in the world, you may or may not be able to go out all night and into the early morning hours. A city that is referred to as “the city that never sleeps” is New York City. But is it really?

To answer this question, SimpleGhar took a look at the average closing times of bars, clubs, cafés, and restaurants for a list of key cities around the globe. Here’s a preview of the ranking for the top 15 cities overall:

Top-level findings

New York City might be widely regarded as the city that never sleeps, but if you look at the closing times of its establishments, it’s only in 10th in our rankings of sleepless cities. In number one spot, it’s Cairo, Egypt, where restaurants close at 23:35, cafés at 00:26 and bars & clubs keep going until 03:00. In places 2 through 4 are cities in the South of Europe and around the Mediterranean: Athens in Greece, Belgrade in Serbia, and Istanbul in Turkey, all of which have remarkably late closing hours. In Athens, bars & clubs stay open until 02:26, in Belgrade, cafés close at 23:23, and in Istanbul, restaurants close at 23:16. Dubai in UAE – a city known for its shopping and entertainment opportunities – is in 5th spot.

Lower in the top 10 are Russia’s capital Moscow, Karachi in Pakistan, and Havana in Cuba. Two global cities famous for their bar and restaurant scene Hong Kong and New York round off the top 10.

Findings by type of establishment

The two cities where bars and clubs stay open the longest are in the Americas. In Miami, Florida – a city famed for its beaches and beach parties – they stay open to 03:41am. In second place is Montevideo in Uruguay, where nightlife venues stay open until 03:26 am.

When it comes to late-night dining, Athens in Greece is ahead of every other city, as restaurants in this ancient city close at 23:48. Tied for 2nd place are Cairo and Las Vegas, both in the Egyptian capital and Sin City eateries close on average at 23:35.

Finally, the city where the cafés are most likely to be open late is Cairo, where cafés stay open close at 00:26 – more than one hour later than in Belgrade, the next closest pursuant, where they keep doors open until 23:23.

Methodology

To uncover which cities go to sleep the latest, SimpleGhar gathered the closing times for cafés (inc. coffee shops) and restaurants from OpenStreetMap. The closing times for bars and clubs were taken from the first four (4) pages of “Bars & Clubs” and “Dance Clubs & Discos” listings in each city’s Tripadvisor Nightlife section.

In cases where the opening hours varied based on days of the week or months/seasons of the year, closing times were averaged across all the times available for each establishment. The team averaged the closing times of these establishments in 78 major world cities. The team then converted these to a total score out of 100 so that SimpleGhar could rank them for non-sleepability.
