Cardinal Michael Czerny, the Vatican under-secretary for migrants and refugees, visited an aid point of the Catholic Caritas for refugees from Ukraine at Barabás, on the Ukrainian border, on Wednesday.
The cardinal expressed solidarity and gave blessing on behalf of Pope Francis to people staying in the local cultural centre transformed into a refugee shelter.
Speaking to reporters, he expressed his condolences to the refugees, whose “lives imploded and who were forced to flee because of the situation”.
He praised Hungary’s well-organised humanitarian aid operation, saying he hoped “every country in the world can provide similar aid for refugees”.
Cardinal Czerny will travel on from Barabás to Ukraine.
