Hungary helping maintain water supply in Transcarpathia, Ukraine
The Hungarian government is donating the municipality of Berehove (Beregszász) 66 million forints (EUR 177,000) to help the city maintain its water supply, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook on Tuesday.
Ukrainians are being forced to leave their homes due to heavy bombing and cities coming under siege, leading to an increasing number of internal refugees seeking shelter in western Ukraine, the minister noted.
“Many of them are now in Transcarpathia (Kárpátalja), and the county needs help so that they can accommodate all of them,” he added.
The donation provided at the request of Zoltán Babják, the city’s mayor, will ensure secure operations of the local waterworks in the near future, Szijjártó said.
The minister added that the Hungarian government had decided against sending weapons to Ukraine but was providing all possible humanitarian assistance “to ease the burdens of people in a difficult situation”, he said.
