These Hungarian dishes were served at the 94th Oscar Awards Gala
At the 94th Academy Awards Gala, attendees could try dozens of elegant, golden and delicious pieces of fine dining. And, of course, some Hungarian specialities could also be found on the menu. Let’s see what they are.
As Hungarian news portal Blikk reports, this year’s menu was dreamt up by legendary chef Wolfgang Puck, the owner of several international restaurants around the world. The masterchef has been responsible for creating the menu for celebrities and VIP guests at the film industry’s most famous awards gala since 1995. For the first time this year, traditional Hungarian dishes also received an important role on the menu. Another great honour for Hungary was that
István Szántó, the head chef of Wolfgang Puck’s Spago restaurant in Budapest, had also been chosen to be among the hundred chefs working on the gala menu.
Accordingly, the gastronomic expert could present some iconic Hungarian dishes at the 94th Academy Awards gala.
“I am very happy that Wolfgang has given me the opportunity to present myself to the Los Angeles audience. I immediately thought of dishes that are emblematic of Hungarian cuisine,” István Szántó said excitedly.

The chef had a lot of safety and logistical aspects to consider. There had to be ingredients for the dishes on site. He had to choose dishes which are easy to eat, prepared in small portions, served aesthetically, and in impressive quantities. On 27th March,
Hollywood celebrities could enjoy Hungarian specialities such as chicken paprikash, hunter’s stew, Somló dumplings, and Eszterházy cake.
The two chefs, Wolfgang and István, were thinking of fusion solutions. The ingredients were received from the famous local Santa Monica farmers’ market. István brought real Hungarian paprika from home.
The hunter’s stew was made from wagyu beef and served with ricotta-stuffed dumplings and mustard sauce. This way, the dish also included a traditional dish from Wolfgang’s home country, Austria. The traditional chicken paprikash was wrapped in a Hortobágy-style pastry and topped with paprika sauce. The Somló dumplings were served in the shape of walnuts, while the Eszterházy cake was made according to a traditional recipe.
Previously, the masterchef was also pleased to work with István. “I’m proud to have the head chef of my first Spago restaurant in Europe with me, as he will be able to bring a special world, the Hungarian culture, to the table. When I tasted Istvan’s version of the hunter’s stew, I simply fell in love with it. And I’m sure the stars will do the same,” reported Blikk.
Of course, the menu still included some of Wolfgang Puck Catering’s specialities, such as the spicy tuna cones and the smoked salmon pizza. These were served to the elite attendees in the shape of the gala’s iconic statue.
