5 magical Hungarian castles you must visit- PHOTOS

Hungary has no shortage of castles, fortresses and beautiful buildings. Now that the weather is finally warming up, it is the perfect time to explore a few of them.

Bien.hu gathered some of the most stunning castles in the country, five of which we included in our list. 

1. Csókakő

Csókakő can be found in Fejér County, 23 kilometres from Székesfehérvár and 87 kilometres from Budapest. The castle of Csókakő is the only surviving medieval castle in the county, which was also used during the Turkish occupation. Its condition is improving, as many parts have been renovated in recent years.

The castle was built in the Árpád era (11-13th century) and was under Turkish occupation for long decades.

The panoramic hilltop offers gorgeous vistas of the scenic surrounding countryside.

2. Gyula

Gyula can be found in Békés County, next to the Romanian border, 16 kilometres from Békéscsaba and 237 kilometres from Budapest. The castle of Gyula is the only intact plain Gothic brick castle in the lowlands of the former Kingdom of Hungary. It was the dominant border fortress of the country, starting from the 16th century.

Visitors can explore the castle museum while the built-in theatre also offers great entertainment.

3. Eger

Eger can be found in Heves County, 139 kilometres from Budapest. As the centre of the Eger wine region, it is one of the most important Hungarian wine towns. The Egri bikavér is a famous produce of the region, it is enjoyed all around the world. 

The castle is considered one of the largest and most beautiful Hungarian castles. The István Dobó Castle Museum offers a rich exhibition with many interesting historical facts about the battles of the Ottoman period. At the foot of the castle, you can visit the house of the Hungarian writer Géza Gárdonyi.

The city itself also offers many fun activities – wine tasting tours, restaurants and spas.

4. Sárospatak

Sárospatak can be found in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, 70 kilometres from Miskolc and 246 kilometres from Budapest. Among others, it was the residence of the Rákóczi sovereigns. The castle and the fortifications were built by Péter Perényi in the 16th century, and later the area became a Rákóczi estate as a dowry of Zsuzsanna Lorántffy.

Visiting Sárospatak can be part of an excellent weekend getaway, as there are many attractions, museums, memorial houses and taverns in the area.

5. Ozora

Ozora can be found in Tolna County, 139 kilometres from Budapest. The Pipo Castle in Ozora was built in Gothic style on the initiative of Filippo Scolari of Florence.

The construction work was continued by Pipo Ozorai, a famous knight of King Sigismond (Zsigmond király), who fell in love with Borbála Ozorai here.

The building is reminiscent of Italian town palaces, which gives visitors a real romantic atmosphere, as Bien.hu writes.
