Attention! Budapest’s M3 metro line to entirely cease operation
The most frequently used metro line in Budapest, M3, is to cease operation for two days on 13-14 August. Budapest Transport Company (BKK) advises passengers to check out updates on the operation of the capital’s public transport before taking the metro.
Even though you can use the M3 metro line from 15 August, it will commute irregularly. Therefore, telex.hu made its schedule transparent until 20 August.
13-14 August
The M3 metro line will be out of operation between Kőbánya-Kispest and Újpest-központ metro stations. However, you may use metro replacement buses throughout the entire line.
15-16 August
The M3 metro line will restart operation between Kőbánya-Kispest and Kálvin Square. However, it will not stop at Nagyvárad Square. Between the Kálvin Square and Újpest-központ metro stations, you can jump on a metro replacement bus. Furthermore, the M30 station replacement bus will transport passengers to Nagyvárad Square.
From 17 August, on workdays until approximately 9 pm
The metro will operate between Kőbánya-Kispest and Kálvin Square metro stations. In addition, it will also commute between the Göncz Árpád Városközpont and Újpest-központ metro stations. However, it will still not stop at Nagyvárad Square. Between Kálvin Square and the Göncz Árpád Városközpont, you may use the M3 metro replacement bus. Between the Nyugati Pályaudvar and the Göncz Árpád Városközpont metro stations, the M3A replacement bus will also be an option.
From 17 August, on workdays from 9 pm and the weekend
The M3 metro will only commute between the Göncz Árpád Városközpont and the Újpest-központ metro stations. Kőbánya-Kispest and Göncz Árpád városközpont metro station will be connected by the M3 metro replacement bus only.
20 August (do not forget that is the national holiday of Hungary)
The metro will commute on the entire line except for Nagyvárad Square.
Based on the plans, the reconstruction works affecting the M3 metro line are due to finish by spring 2023. Therefore, major and minor modifications in the operation will last only half a year.
BKK, Budapest’s transport company, recommends passengers download and use their BudapestGO application. The app calculates optimal routes by using real-time traffic information. Furthermore, you can buy your ticket or a season ticket on the app as well.

I have said it before and I will say it again. The Channel Tunnel connecting France and England and is 50.46km (31.5 miles) long, most of which is 250m below the seabed of a deep sea in difficult geological conditions and comprises 3 tunnels plus ancillary areas. It was built in 6 years. The M3 has had all the tunnels and stations etc for years, but a basic refurbishment is taking over 5 years? Unbelievable inefficiency.
M3, under renovation since 2017….pure professionalism.
What a GROWING history has the M3 in Budapest.
Conceived thought 1968 – construction commenced 1970.
The first section of the M3 – opened for General Public Metro Transportation – 1976.
Throughout its DECADES of being a Public Metro Service – it has been “dogged” – “embroiled” in controversy.
The “Blue Line” – M3, our longest metro line, of the (4) four Metro Public Service lines in Budapest.
Decades on – the M3 remains to the Government of Hungary – an ABSOLUTE financial Cataclysmic – DRAIN.
WHEN – will it END ???
WHO – is to “Bear” the BLAME – the over decades, taxes of Hungarians and “other” funding, to maintain and keep operational the M3 – as a “means” of a muchly needed “mode” of a Public Service/Facility of Transportation ???
1968 on – the “Changing” face of Politics / Governments in Hungary, no greater than post 1989, the BLAME Game – keeps RETURNING – to the POWER used from Governments – for a “Myriad of Reasons” – but principally focused & centered on COST – the “quick fix” idiotic scenario, they Governments – have continuously PRACTICED & Pursued, that WE continue, as Citizens to WITNESS.
Governments – in the past, through to the present, under the Fidesz Political led Party of Hungary, its Leader and present Prime Minister of Hungary – Victor Orban, the bulk in MAJORITY of BLAME – they CARRY.
Ferenciek tere – my M3 public transport metro station.
Nearing closure of 2 and a half years – or 30 months – out of public metro transportation USE – never re-opened in ALL those months – WHEN will it be AGAIN, part of the M3 Metro Line of Budapest, servicing the public NEEDS of Metro Transportation in Budapest ???
there was no need at all of refurbishment which is taking forever. The only need was to change the trains without aircon with new ones with aircon or provide aircon to the refurbished ones option which as I heard is not possible
