New scenic tram line to start operating in Budapest

From mid-August, tram line 2B will transport passengers between Pesterzsébet, the 20th district of Budapest and the Jászai Mari Square. The new line will run near the Danube and provide a unique panoramic view of many famous sights, such as the Buda Castle, the Chain Bridge and the Parliament, as it passes through Budapest downtown. The line will start operating on 13 August.

The new tram line will likely be a tourist attraction 

Thanks to the new line, you will not be required to transfer between the centre of the 20th district and downtown Budapest, iho.hu says. The new 2B line will serve Boráros Square (tram lines 4 and 6), the Fővám Square (M4 metro line), the Vigadó Square (M1 metro line) and the Kossuth Lajos Square (M2 metro line). 

The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) started a public consultation on whether to establish the new tram line or not, and the people unanimously voted for it. The trams will commute between Jászai Mari Square and Haller Street on the rails of tram line nr 2., which was selected multiple times as one of Europe’s most beautiful tram lines.

Three “Danube” tram lines on the Pest side

The new tram line allows passengers to reach downtown from Pesterzsébet easier than before. At present, you can only use line nr 51, and you need to transfer. 

The new line will commute daily from 13 August, every 15 to 20 minutes depending on the time of the day. Furthermore, the tram line will provide a direct link to the downtown for those living in Budapest’s new residential district around the junction of the Mester and Vágóhíd Streets.

The municipal leadership aims to create longer lines and eliminate the number of transfers to make it easier for passengers to commute even to the outer districts. On the Danube bank, you may use three tram lines from mid-August: lines 2, 2B and 2M. Therefore, trams on the line will commute more frequently.

In operation since 1866, the Budapest tram network is one of the world’s largest tram networks, operating on 174 kilometres of total route, Wikipedia says.
