VIDEOS: Jamaican superstar Sean Paul speaks Hungarian!
Sean Paul is a Jamaican dancehall rapper and singer who is regarded as one of the genre’s most prolific artists. Many say he is the king of raggaeton. After throwing a magnificent show last Friday on Strand Fesitval in Zamárdi, near Lake Balaton, Sean Paul gave a video interview for index. During that he spoke Hungarian and even shared how he would like to celebrate his 50th birthday. Read more and check out the full video interview below.
According to index.hu, organizers were not sure that the Jamaican superstar would come to the Strand Festival. However, he showed up on August 19 for his concert and threw an unrivalled party for the guests of the Balaton festival. Afterwards, he talked to index about why he learnt Hungarian words, his relationship with Bob Marley’s son, and how he would like to celebrate his 50th birthday.
The Jamaican rapper said Hungary always gives him a lot of energy. He said his water polo coach was Hungarian, so it was very special to him to sing for Hungarians. “I was trained by one of you, guys. It was awesome. I am always feeling good on the stage here”, he added about the experience.
Asked about his new song with Gwen Stefani, he praised the talent of the American singer. “I always loved her music … I approached her to do the song, and she loved it”, Sean Paul said.
The son of Bob Marley will also be on his new album. He said his younger brother and Damian Marley went to school with him, though they were five years younger. He grew up with a feeling that Bob Marley was his uncle, he said. “I feel special just to know him”, he added. “Damian and me have always had a relationship, making music sometimes”, Sean Paul said.
Whether he would organize a party for his 50th birthday and invite celebrities or do something else, he said his mother also asked that same question. However, he prefers family and friends on such occasions. “I won’t overdo it”, he cleared.
He said during his concert that he speaks some words in Hungarian. On the question where he learnt them he replied that László Borbély, his water polo coach, “Laci”, taught him Hungarian. He knew some more once, he said, but forgot a lot. Therefore, he only mentioned “Köszönöm”, meaning thank you. However,
he added his spelling was incorrect since he wrote it with a “c” letter.
“Being thankful is very important for me”, he said. That is why he learnt that word first in Hungarian and still remembers it.
At the end of this TikTok video he also speaks Hungarian:
