PHOTOS: One of Hungary’s most prominent hotels awaits renovation
Hotel Aranybika (Hotel Golden Bull) in Debrecen is going to be renovated as the jury announced the winning design competition recently. The Napur Architect Architectural Office Ltd. won the design competition for the renovation and partial redevelopment of the hotel by the owner of the building, Mathias Corvinus Collegium.
“When Mathias Corvinus Collegium – MCC decided to purchase the Aranybika, the aim was to make this beautiful architectural monument once again a jewel of the city, in keeping with its history, fame and significance,” writes Balázs Orbán, political director of PM Viktor Orbán, in a Facebook post.
The jury found that the winning entry, with its radically conservative approach, fully meets the expectations of the MCC and the city’s citizenry, reports turizmus.com. The tender for the renovation of the building, and the creation of a new educational centre was won by NAPUR ARCHITECT Kft. Their plans include the following:
- architecturally, they give a real response to the spirit of the MCC,
- they are in harmony with the built environment, and
- meet the expectations of the people of Debrecen for a renovated Aranybika in the main square of Debrecen, in a traditional architectural style that fits into the historic townscape.
According to the jury, the historical reflection proposed by the entry is the most obvious and popular solution for the new wing. It is consistently applied to all facades of the building, so there is no stylistic break in the building – even if the rear facade does not follow the 21st century look of the competition, writes dehir.hu.
According to the Facebook post of Balázs Orbán, the next step will be the demolition of the socialist-era wing. It is in a very poor state and it will be replaced by a building for MCC students and professional activities. This will be followed by the monumental reconstruction of the Art Nouveau part of the building and the renewal of the public space around the block.
