Hungary will hold many Advent fairs despite the high energy costs

Despite the many hurdles around the Christmas markets in Budapest, advent fairs will still be happening in many rural towns. This might seem a bit reckless considering the sky-high energy costs, but nothing can stop the residents who just finally want to enjoy the Christmas spirit after two years of the pandemic. Most regional capitals will have an advent fair with floodlights on. For most municipalities, paying the bills will be an issue but the festival must happen. 

Pécs, Debrecen, Szombathely and Nagykanizsa will certainly hold advent fairs — reported ATV.hu. During the Covid pandemic, an advent fair was just a dream. After two years of solitary celebration, we could finally have a nice community event. However, the reality of the energy crisis came crashing down crushing our dreams once again. Some refrained from any celebrations because of the costs. But most larger cities said, enough was enough, and they would celebrate Christmas properly, no matter what.

Spare no expenses

Most of the cities that will hold a fair will not settle for an ordinary event. After years of isolation, they want to ensure that visitors will have an unforgettable time. Nagykanizsa, for example, prepares something special — said Kriszitán Berta in the report. The fair will last until 31 December, so people can visit it in between the holidays.

On the main square of Pécs, a bustling fair will await people who want to enjoy the Christmas spirit. The gastronomical experience will be well taken care of, that is for certain. Unlike in Nagykanizsa, this will not last as long but it will start earlier, on 25 November. This will be the 14th advent artisan and fable fair held in the city.

Debrecen will provide the necessary hot wine, chimney cake and baubles for everyone who pays a visit. Floodlights will light up the city to create a festive atmosphere. According to Tibor Korponai, the programme director of Főnix Event Center Debrecen, this advent season will be spectacular. Everybody will have a chance to experience the joys of Christmas preparations, like in the previous years, prior to the lockdowns.

Most regional capitals will hold a fair but they may cut back on floodlights, concerts or programmes. However, the Christmas market’s fate in the capital is still uncertain. As of the latest news, the Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square may be cancelled this year. There are contradicting pieces of information about the event.

Nevertheless, the world-famous advent fair in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica will be held and it will be as good as always. The lavish event will still be the pinnacle of the Hungarian Christmas experience.
