Hot wine Christmas fondant is this year’s hit in Hungary

Hungarians are obsessed with this little sweet. They go as far as saying that Christmas is not even a proper holiday without it. There have been many iterations of it over the years. There are versions filled with cucumber, hot sauce, cole or even pizza, but this year hot wine will be the hit. It was chosen as the best during this year’s Christmas fondant competition.

Every year, the citizens of Hungary organise a competition to select the best fondant of the year. They invite every company, no matter the size, to participate in the event. There are twelve categories in the competition so that everybody can compete fairly. There is a category for artisan, low-cost or even vegan products. This year 300 judges helped to decide which will be the best. The best has been chosen from among 186 different types of fondant. About 8,000 pieces were given out to the judges so they could select the 20 winners — reports Telex.hu.

This year’s best

There is a category that decides which is the best fondant of the year. This year, a producer from the city of Gyula came first in the competition. It was a fondant with a hot wine flavour. The second place was awarded to a Promnád Café from Balatongyörök. They made a fondant called “Frizzy” which is filled with peanut and popping candy. Finally, third place was taken by Stühmer from Maklár with its pear gel and muscat-filled fondant.

In the low-cost category, TESCO came first with its caramel-filled fondant. In the same category, Chocofive’s fondant came second with its popping candy filling. Seems like the true winner of this year’s competition was popping candy. And last, but not least, the third place in this category was awarded to Penny Market’s Choco’la Belga. This is probably the most complicated flavour this year. It is covered in dark chocolate and sour cherry is inside, but it is lactose-free and vegan at the same time, without any added sweetener or sugar.

While the newest taste of the year was made by Piros Mogyorós, bringing a milk cream, milk chocolate fondant filled with shredded peanuts and surprise surprise, popping candy. Furthermore, there was a vegan category where the winner was the Damniczki Confectionery from Székesfehérvár. They brought a new and quite simple quince-filled fondant.
