Mourning: Hungarian Olympic, world and European champion dies
Hungarian Olympic, world and European champion, 272-time national team water polo player Gábor Csapó has died at the age of seventy-two. According to the website of the Hungarian Water Polo Federation (MVLSZ), the legendary sportsman died at dawn on Sunday.
The Facebook page of waterpolo.hu wrote the following about him: “We have lost one of the legends of Hungarian water polo, who was a dominant figure in the sport as a player and coach. He was an absolute key man of the national team in the golden age of the seventies and of course an unshakeable pillar of Vasas, which won the European Champions Cup, the European Cup Winners Cup and a series of championships.”
Csapó was taken to hospital in early November and placed on a ventilator, suffering from an incurable illness, Telex reports.
