Budapest will increase the airport bus ticket price drastically
Based on a proposal the Municipal Council of Budapest will decide next Wednesday about, the ticket and season ticket system of the capital will significantly change from April. That concerns even the airport shuttle bus 100E commuting between the downtown Deák Ferenc Square and the Ferenc Liszt International Airport.
Significant price increase again
According to telex.hu, five tickets and travelcards will be terminated. Furthermore, the municipal council will increase the price of the 100E airport shuttle bus popular among foreign tourists visiting Hungary’s magnificent capital. And that is not just information the Hungarian press picked up from corridor gossip. The plan was announced by Ambrus Kiss, Budapest’s deputy mayor.
District mayors and councillors of the municipal council are to discuss the proposal at the February session. If they accept the proposal, the ticket price for the 100E bus connecting Budapest’s airport with its downtown will increase by HUF 700 (EUR 1.82).
The measure will enter into effect from 1 April, the start of the tourism season. The price will go up from HUF 1,500 to HUF 2,200 (EUR 5.73).
According to the proposal’s preamble, the price rise will not harm the service’s popularity. BKK, Budapest’s transport company, increased prices in 2022 for the last time. In 2017, when the 100E airport shuttle bus started service, a ticket cost HUF 900. That was increased to HUF 1,500 in 2022.
It will not harm the popularity of the service
Mr Kiss said that 80 percent of the passengers are foreigners. On questions concerning other ticket and season ticket prices, the deputy mayor said that such a measure is not in the plans. He added a decision concerning a price increase would be counterproductive in the current situation.
However, the municipal council will terminate five different kinds of tickets and season tickets:
- transfer ticket
- short section metro ticket for up to 3 stops
- seven-day Budapest-travelcard
- 5/30 BKK travelcards
- supplementary seven-day travelcard
The reason for the decision is that they were not popular enough. Furthermore, the demand for time-based tickets (30-minute ticket and 90-minute ticket) are much higher. Moreover, the seven-day Budapest travelcard is currently more expensive than the 15-day Budapest pass. As a result, keeping it in the store is meaningless.
Gergely Karácsony, the opposition-backed mayor of Budapest, has a majority in the Municipal Council. Since all the above-mentioned modifications were submitted by him, they are expected to be accepted next Wednesday. HERE you may find all the different types of tickets with their prices.

Hungary is becoming a very expensive tourist destination. I am sure tourists will find better and cheaper alternatives….we will see a drastic decrease in the number of tourists this year.
“Populism” (which is a codeword for doing what the people/voters actually want) is oh-so terrible a thing, but give power to the Left, and you get this.
