Watch out! These are Hungary’s most dangerous motorways

2022 brought the worst accident statistics of the past three years. There were 13,499 personal injury accidents in the country in 11 months, while in 2021, there were 13,073, and in 2020, there were 12,715 in the same period. Have a look at the most dangerous motorways in Hungary!

Most people were injured on road 4 in Hungary

Unsurprisingly, the largest number of cars broke down and the most people were injured in 2022 on the longest road in Hungary, Highway 4, which stretches from Budapest in a semicircle and through four counties to Záhony. In terms of the number of personal injury accidents, three different highways follow road 4: M3, M1, M5 highways. After these, the most dangerous roads were motorways 3, 5, 1, 6, 51, and 7.

M1 highway is one of the most dangerous roads

However, we get more exact data if we calculate the personal injury accidents for each of them to the length of the given road. Here, the order is different, in the first half of 2022, the M1 connecting the capital with Hegyeshalom had the fewest traffic accidents with human injuries per kilometer, followed by the M5, which stretches almost as straight as an arrow from Budapest to the Röszke border station.

These roads had the highest number of fatal accidents

Fortunately, in terms of fatal accidents, the 11 months examined in 2022 brought the second lowest number of the past decade, writes vezess.hu. Last year, there were a total of 410 fatal traffic accidents, compared to 382 two years earlier.

If we have a look at personal injury per kilometer, the data is slightly different. According to it, last year the highest number of fatal accidents per kilometer occurred on the 2102 side road. Side road number 2102 is a four-digit side road in the North-Pest agglomeration. Its first few kilometers are still in the territory of Budapest, but the majority of it connects settlements in Pest County.

Which county is the most dangerous in Hungary?

In the police database, you can also look at the number of accidents broken down into administrative areas. In Pest County, 54 fatal accidents occurred in these 11 months in 2022, in Bács-Kiskun 47, followed by Borsod with 27, then Csongrád (22) and Veszprém (21) make up the top five.
