After five and a half years, Budapest metro line 3 will be back in full service today
Incredibly, the moment has arrived when Budapest’s busiest metro line is back on the full line. But there are still two stations to go.
The renovation of the M3 metro started in the autumn of 2017. During the five-and-a-half-year reconstruction, the metro line’s infrastructure was completely renewed: new tracks and sidings were built, safety equipment was replaced and the tunnels were insulated. All stations have been given a new exterior and interior. Stations have also been made barrier-free, with lifts and inclined lifts installed to enable people with reduced mobility to use the metro, and tactile signs to help people with visual impairments.
Weekdays
Metro 3 will be running again on weekdays from Monday afternoon on the entire line between Kőbánya-Kispest and Újpest-központ, but the Budapest Transport Centre told that renovation work is still ongoing at Nagyvárad Square and Lehel Square, so trains will not stop at these stations. The area around the closed stations can be reached by replacement buses and other services.
Weekends
On weekends, trains will only run between Újpest-központ and Göncz Árpád city center. Between Göncz Árpád city center and Kőbánya-Kispest you can take the M3 replacement bus. The renovation of metro line 3 is expected to be fully completed in May.
