A Hungarian died in a huge avalanche in the US
Three men have been swept away by an avalanche in the Colorado ski resort of Aspen in the United States. One Hungarian man could not be rescued.
The Blikk reports that on Sunday afternoon at around 1:30 p.m. the alarm was raised that a strong avalanche had been detected, which could have dragged three people away. The falling snow wall was hundreds of metres wide and hundreds of metres long. Two were not in danger, but the third person was trapped under the snow.
A helicopter was sent to the area but was unable to land. One of the skiers managed to bring the buried Hungarian athlete to the surface and resuscitation was started, but it was too late. The Hungarian man had gone hiking in the mountains, not skiing. The authorities said that all three men had received avalanche rescue training.
“GĂ¡bor was a great sportsman, a real hero, an exemplary personality. He saved lives for years as a volunteer member of the Hungarian Lifeguard Service. He was one of the most active and skilled, helping people in need in his free time during the summer”, said a friend of the deceased.
The last fatal accident in this area occurred in 2018.
