Hungarian mountaineer disappears in the Alps

A Hungarian mountaineer has disappeared in the Italian-Swiss section of the Alps.

A Hungarian mountain climber has disappeared in the Monte Rosa Massif on the border between Italy and Switzerland, the Italian news agency ANSA reports. On Thursday afternoon, the Kalifa Alpine Team told MTI that the 36-year-old mountaineer, Ákos Győrffy, was still being sought by Italian authorities.

According to the team, Győrffy left for a weekend climb to Monte Rosa last Friday, but did not return on time, Telex writes.

According to ANSA, the climber was last seen five days ago, on Saturday, at a car park in Staffal (where Győrffy’s car was found) and then at the Gnifetti Hut at 3,647 metres, where the man’s last GPS signal came from.

Since Wednesday, the authorities have been searching “in full force” for the climber, with the cooperation of the Hungarian consulate. However, the aerial search on Wednesday afternoon was unsuccessful, with the plane having to abandon the search prematurely due to poor visibility and weather conditions, Montagna.tv reports.

The search continued on Thursday morning, and the Aosta Valley Mountain Rescue Service’s ground units are also searching for the climber. Győrffy was scheduled to set off on Saturday with the Kalifa Alpine Team to climb the world’s third highest peak, the 8,586-metre-high Kangchenjunga, without an oxygen tank.
