Brand new Netflix series shot in Budapest!

The trailer is out for the upcoming Netflix show All the Light We Cannot See. The series tells the story of a blind girl and her father, who are trying to escape from Nazi-occupied France.

The production is going to debut on the streaming service on 2 November, almost half a year from now. In the newly released trailer, if we look carefully, we can notice some familiar buildings. That is because a large part of the filming took place in Budapest and Soponya, wrote 24.hu.

Series production and cast

The plot of the show is based on a book of the same name, written by Pulitzer Prize winner novelist Anthony Doerr. It was transformed onto the cinema screen by executive producer Shawn Levy. He previously directed 10 episodes of the prestigious Netflix production Stranger Things. All in all, the series will consist of 4 episodes.

The biggest star of the act is Mark Ruffalo (who has been to Hungary before). He is well known for playing the role of Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Marvel cinematic universe productions. He will be playing the father throughout the series. Besides him, breakout actress Aria Mia Loberti plays the other main role, that of the blind daughter.

It is an interesting yet unfortunate fact that Loberti was born with a rare genetic eye disease, which makes her legally blind. In addition, she landed the role despite a complete lack of experience or education in the field. A fan of the book, she auditioned after learning about the search from a former childhood teacher. Loberti beat out thousands of submissions to secure the position and it is her first ever acting role.

Hungarian locations

Those with a sharp eye could notice that the creators shot several scenes in different parts of Hungary, especially in the capital. One, for example, is the Festetics Palace, home to Andrássy University Budapest. The plans for the building were drawn up by renowned 19^th century Hungarian architect, Miklós Ybl. The building can be found behind the Museum Garden.

Another shooting location is the Zichy Castle in Sopoly. This is a 200-year-old abandoned building first made in the late 18^th century but was later expanded on the ideas of Mihály Pollack. Since 1998, it’s been laying empty and without use.

Last but not least, we could spot the Exchange Palace, built by Ignác Alpár in 1907. Nowadays, it is the home of Hungarian Television, the national public service broadcasting organisation.

The famous Parisian boulevard, the Champs-Élysées has also been recreated in Vécsey Street, which connects Szabadság Square and Kossuth Square in Budapest.
