New type of motorway vignette to be introduced in Hungary
From 2024, Hungary will also have to introduce a one-day motorway vignette due to an EU requirement. It is calculated that a daily sticker will cost a maximum of around HUF 4,500 (EUR 12.14).
Currently, it is not possible to buy a motorway sticker for less than 10 days in Hungary. However, an EU decision adopted in 2022 could change this. It will require Member States to provide daily, weekly, monthly and annual stickers for heavy goods vehicles, and daily, weekly and/or 10-day, monthly and/or two-monthly and annual stickers for cars from 2024 at the latest, Pénzcetrum reports.
According to Totalcar, the EU rules state that the bi-monthly charge cannot exceed 30 percent of the annual charge, the monthly charge cannot exceed 19 percent of the annual charge, the 10-day charge cannot exceed 12 percent of the annual charge, the weekly charge cannot exceed 11 percent of the annual charge and the daily charge cannot exceed 9 percent of the annual charge.
At current prices in Hungary, the annual fee is HUF 49,190 (EUR 132.64). This means that the maximum price of the other vignettes would be the following:
- bi-monthly: HUF 14,757 (EUR 39.79),
- monthly: HUF 9346 (EUR 25.20),
- 10 days: HUF 5902 (EUR 15.91),
- weekly: HUF 5410 (EUR 14.59),
- daily: HUF 4 427 (EUR 11.94).
This means that next year, it will cost a maximum of about HUF 4500 per day to use a motorway in Hungary.
