The one-day motorway vignette is coming to Hungary
There will definitely be a one-day motorway vignette in Hungary. The Hungarian government will decide on the details later, but you can already calculate how much this huge change could cost motorists.
New one-day motorway vignette in Hungary
The Hungarian government will in fact introduce a one-day motorway vignette next year, the Ministry of Construction and Transport told VilĂ¡ggazdasĂ¡g.
According to the ministry, the deadline for the introduction of the new measure is 25 March 2024. This date is set by the Eurovignette directive of the European Parliament and the Council. It is not yet known when we will see these new vignettes in the Hungarian toll system.
“At the moment, no decision has been taken on the price of the one-day pass, nor on the exact date of its domestic introduction,” said the ERM.
When and how much will it be available?
Next March is the latest deadline. Until then, it is unlikely that EU Member States will use it, as it goes against the interests of their public finances. The one-day entitlement creates a loss of revenue for countries’ toll systems by offering a cheaper toll product instead of a more expensive one.
This is also true for Hungary. In Hungary, the cheapest vignette is the 10-day vignette, which is available for between HUF 2750 and HUF 8000 (between EUR 7,43 and EUR 21.61). It is also bought by people who enter the country and leave the same day. A one-day pass would obviously be cheaper, which is why Hungary, like most EU countries, is delaying its introduction.
It is quite possible that Hungary will only activate the new entitlement in the second half of 2024. After that, it can no longer risk being subject to an EU commitment procedure.
According to the Eurovignette guidelines, the price of a one-day vignette cannot exceed 9 percent of the annual entitlement, which would currently be HUF 5091 (EUR 13.75), but this may be affected by inflation, napi.hu reports.
