213th anniversary of Colombia’s independence celebrated in Budapest
The Embassy of Colombia in Budapest celebrated the country’s national day again this year, on 20 July 2023.
Colombia’s declaration of independence took place on 20 July 1810, when the Junta de Santa Fe was formed in Santa Fe de Bogotá, the capital of the Spanish colonial New Granada Viceroyalty, to govern the territory independently of Spain.
The celebrations to mark the 213th anniversary of Colombia’s independence were organised by the embassy at the Budapest Marriott Hotel. Speaking to the diplomatic community, H.E. Ambassador Ignacio Ruiz pointed out that, despite the rich culture of the South American country, there were unfortunately some names in its history that they would never want to see again, such as Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria. He said that they needed Shakira and worthy people like her all the more, who would bring the good name of Colombia to the world.
Ambassador Ruiz stressed that there is a pragmatic and good relationship between the Hungarian and Colombian governments and he is very happy to be serving Colombia in Hungary.
Lóránd Endreffy, the outgoing Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the region, welcomed Colombia on behalf of the government and, as a former ambassador, stressed that he had always kept Colombia in his heart, having made true friends and met warm-hearted people there.
After the speeches, those present enjoyed live music and food from Colombia.
