Hungarian police have captured a Rwandan man after a Budapest court decided to fast-track his extradition to Belgium. A European arrest warrant has been issued by the Belgian authorities against the 24-year-old wanted on charges of organised crime, attempted murder and torture.
Police working for the National Investigation Bureau and the TEK counter-terrorism centre arrested the man in Budapest’s 8th district on Friday, according to police.hu. The Metropolitan Court said earlier that it has issued a deadline of August 14 for the Belgian authorities to receive the suspect, after which date he would be released.
A mobile phone video recording left at the crime scene shows the kidnap and torture of a Dutch national in Eindhoven on 22 February. The victim was then driven to Belgium and tortured in the car and then at a warehouse in Antwerp before being taken to Poppel, where the vehicle broke down. The victim was subsequently found by local workers and taken to hospital. The suspect faces a maximum prison sentence of 30 years. Here is the video of the police about his capture:
