Disturbing VIDEO: Bedbugs cover patients in a nursing home in Western Hungary
A leaked video from a nursing home for psychiatric patients shows a mentally ill person lying on a bed, covered in bedbugs.
The video was shared by Átlátszó, a Hungarian investigative news outlet, which wrote in their article that Szentgothárd is not the only place where the bloodsucking insects cause serious problems. Their source said the video showed only one bed, but the entire facility was affected by the bug invasion. The integrated social institution of Vas County has 734 places for chronic psychiatric patients.
Átlátszó’s informant said the situation hadn’t changed since 2018. The unnamed source added that some patients collected signatures but were told the clearing was in progress. However, nothing happened. Now both buildings are infected, the invasion of the bedbugs seems unstoppable. Nurses believe that was because the clearing process did not eliminate the eggs. Here is the video:
The informant said nurses tried to help, but they lacked proper equipment. They change the bedclothes more frequently, but regardless of their efforts, the bedbugs cover everything in 30 minutes. Relatives do not know about the situation since they can only meet the patients in the garden or the reception room.

Bedbugs-induced curfew
Last November, Átlátszó reported on a similar incident that took place in the Nagymágocs nursery home. The institution said they carried out clearing multiple times. However, they did not tell the names of the companies they entrusted for the job. Therefore, Átlátszó requested relevant public data but learned that the national directorate of the nursing homes couldn’t provide that as they don’t store such documentation.
Blikk wrote that nurses quit in Szentgotthárd one after the other because of the appalling conditions. Employees complain that the bedbugs infect their clothes, thus they unwittingly carry them home. A local hairdresser already asked one of them to bypass her studio because of the potential infection. The nurses stressed they had no intention to harm the reputation of the institution. They aim to draw the public’s attention to the pressing issue.
The Directorate-General for Social Affairs and Child Protection conducted a thorough inspection of the institution. Following that, they introduced curfew for the patients, infostart wrote.
