MAP shows most burglary-ridden Budapest districts, Hungarian towns
The number of burglaries regularly increases during the summer, even though sometimes even a bar on the window would be enough to ward off the illegal intruders. To call citizens’ attention to the rampant issue, the Hungarian police shared a map showing the most burglary-ridden Budapest districts and Hungarian towns. And it lists some surprising places.
According to novekedes.hu, the Hungarian National Bank’s news outlet, burglars tend to be quite shrewd. For example, police caught a gang of four following luxury cars. They tracked down the address of the owners by using illegal methods and robbed their houses when they were away. Before authorities arrested them, they stole more than HUF 34 million (EUR 88,740) from 16 properties. Among other high-value items, they took foreign currency, expensive watches, jewellery and designer handbags.
Based on the data of the Budapest police, the number of registered burglaries reached 402 in the first half of 2023. In H1 2022, that number was 444. However, those numbers only inform us about the solved cases. They do not indicate the time of the crime but only the date of registration. The number of Budapest cases rises way above the national average.
Here is a map by the Hungarian police of the registered burglaries in Hungary between 15 May and 16 July:

Here is what you should do to prevent burglaries
Police only have data about the number of burglaries per 100,000 from 2019. According to the map shared on prestat.lechnerkozpont.hu and in our article, the most dangerous neighbourhoods in Budapest are districts II., V., VI. and IX. Furthermore, you should be rather cautious in the XI., I. and XVIII. districts. The least affected areas are districts III., IV., XXII. and XXI., in Csepel.
How can you protect yourself? Novekedes.hu says bars and alarms can be useful because burglars do not like to bother with such obstacles. What’s more, it’s best if you live in a crowded street or junction because then you can easily find an eye-witness in case of an incident. Burglars like to target family houses because they hope to find more valuables there. It’s also known that summertime is their favourite period since many places remain vacant.
For your information, TV simulators are widely available for only a couple of thousands of forints. These devices give the false illusion as if someone was at home watching TV. Moreover, you can put motion sensor lights outside of your door since burglars prefer to attack when it’s dark. You should have your mailbox emptied regularly, even if you’re away on vacation.
