VIDEO: WWII fighter aircraft found in Lake Balaton, weapons recovered
Last week, experts recovered a fighter aircraft that crashed into Lake Balaton during World War II in the Balatonakarattya area. Now, new objects have been recovered from the wreckage.
As a result of several days of hard work by five units of the Hungarian Defence Forces and the experts of the Military History Institute and Museum of the Ministry of Defence, the first large part of a Hungarian Messerschmitt fighter plane that crashed into Lake Balaton during World War II was recovered on 10 October, honvedelem.hu reported. The wreckage was covered with eighty centimetres of mud.
Since then, new objects have been recovered from the wreckage, likebalaton.hu reports. This time, experts have managed to uncover a significant element of the fighter’s armament. Some of these were found in surprisingly good condition, as the mud had preserved them in excellent condition. Some pieces have survived in astonishingly good shape to the civilian eye.
The newly found weapon was still covered in a layer of mud, but the ballistics examination concluded that it could be safely transported to the cordoned-off part of the beach, where it was to be thoroughly examined again.
This find is special because, apart from the one that has now been found after nearly 80 years, there is no other surviving Hungarian Messerschmitt fighter aircraft known in the world.
