Unexpected turn: Hungary may not get the money from the European Commission
Hungary has received the first tranche of EU funding, but the European Commission can block the funds again at any time.
The Hungarian government has met the conditions
The two calendar years of the 2021-2027 EU development cycle have already seen a series of debates in Brussels. Last week, the Hungarian government successfully negotiated with the European Commission, and it was concluded that the independence of the Hungarian judiciary has been strengthened with the latest reform package. The Brussels findings suggest that it now meets the horizontal eligibility criteria linked to the EU budget, portfolio.hu reports.
The ECJ has finally approved the Hungarian government’s legislative package, amended with two additions. Both the curia and the CJEU regulations will only enter into force on the 61st day after their publication.
The EC is watching
A European Commission spokesman said that Hungary was being watched, with the Commission paying particular attention to “the criteria necessary to ensure the independence of the judiciary, a key aspect of European values”.
The spokesperson indicated that if they see a backlash, they will stop payments, including if the latest amendments do not enter into force for whatever reason. The same was said by Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders at a briefing in Brussels last week. At the time, the College’s head of area indicated that they were ready to impose new sanctions at any time
In summary, the money is available to Hungary for now, but it can be frozen by the EC at any time. It is also important to note that on paper, all EUR 22 billion of cohesion funding could now be mobilised, but technically only EUR 10.2 billion of that is available: EUR 6.35 billion remains suspended under the conditionality procedure, and a further EUR 2.6 billion is blocked due to other horizontal conditions (educational freedom, sexual minority rights, migration debate).

Not a surprise. No one should trust the EU.
It is odd that a representative from Lithuania was complaining about Hungary’s membership. First, Lithuania is a new member, so far, its contribution is minimal. Lithuania is a country that if attacked the whole of NATO must go to war to protect the territory because it is incapable of doing so. It is obvious that Lithuania is an EU lap dog and will ignore the welfare of its citizens and vote with the EU. So, Lithuanian EU rep “shut up”! EU and NATO membership is not advantageous to the group and if anyone should be dropped it is Lithuania.
The Euros are doing with money what the Soviets were doing with tanks, and that’s only because the E.U. has no tanks… – yet. What a pity that a great idea of nations previously hostile to each other for centuries cooperating and trading has turned into an overbearing, anti-democratic, mean, corrupt neurotic bully. It often happens, though.
Rephrase: the EU does not trust Hungary. As our Politicians are always keen to point out – there is a need to monitor compliance!
Speaking of “contribution” to the EU:
https://www.statista.com/chart/18794/net-contributors-to-eu-budget/
Both Hungary and Lithuania were admitted to the EU on 1 May 2004 and have been net beneficiaries ever since.
Our current EU contribution is vetoing 26 other Member’s decisions. Question. If you are in a club and one member of a 27 member club routinely disagrees with everyone else or stops the club from doing things … What is likely to happen?
The EU along with the US are responsible for the Ukraine war.- they couldn’t handle a twice elected goverment there and set out to get rid of it violently while yelling democracy and corruption. Turns out the then VP of the US were the most corrupt.
There would be no NATO if the US pulls out. It has funded 90% of the cost for 70 years and the US taxpayers are sick of it.
The latest EU joke is they are trying to destroy X and Elon musk. How dare they have a platform they disagree with.

Emeritus Professor at Law, I write.
The subject of this article, that has “drawn” comments from commentators mariavontheresa and Michael Steiner, credit to them, as they have revealed in the past, there membership and steadfast position that entirely support the Orban Government and the Fidesz Political Party.
I have been waiting, for the word compliance to again surface, be bought back into argument, on the judicial rulings and judgements handed down rightfully, from the Court of Justice of the European Union, on Hungary.
Norbert congratulations, you have “awoken” a sleeping tiger, that by writing the word compliance, commentators such as mariavontheresa and Michael Steiner, possible through memory loss or deliberate non reference, continuously avoid fact, that Hungary has failed in its legal compliance(s) in various sectional parts, in its membership of the European Union.
Compliance, predominantly what Law rules on, built on and around the concise oxford dictionary definition of the word compliance.
Defined in meaning:
“the ways in which the state maintains order and compliance.”
Hungary by its judged failings to comply to the Laws of the European Union, found of guilt in judgements because Hungary did not comply, broke Laws under compliance.
Hungary can never remove this illegal practice they undertook in there European Union Membership.
