Key changes in Hungarian public transport summarised in 10 points

From 1 March, Hungary will have a simpler and cheaper public transport fare system, including free travel for under-14s and new 24-hour county and country fare products. Information on the discounts was provided by the MÁV-Volán Group. Below are the main changes summarised.

As we reported yesterday, instead of the current 15 season ticket constructions, two will remain from the spring: the county and country season ticket. Meanwhile, instead of the current 65, there will be about 20 types of discounts.

Lelépő has summarised the changes in 10 points, which we are presenting below:

1. Under 14s and over 65s will travel free of charge, while 14-25 year olds will pay half price.
2. From 1 March, it will also be possible to buy an additional ticket for first and premium class with the country pass.
3. In addition to the county and country season tickets, all other types of season tickets will be discontinued. This includes half-monthly season tickets, HÉV season tickets, Volánbus regional season tickets and TramTrain season tickets.
4. In the case of discounted county and country passes, the beneficiaries are also supplemented by those with a travel card for the disabled.
5. “Vármegye24” (County24) and “Magyarország24” (Hungary24) day tickets will be introduced for those planning multiple trips a day. The former can be used within 24 hours under the same conditions as the county ticket for the same county, the latter under the same conditions as the country ticket.
6. Disabled people and long-term sick people who now pay a reduced fare of 90 percent for intercity transport, but can already use local transport free of charge, will be able to use intercity transport free of charge.
7. People who will not need to buy tickets include blind, hearing impaired, those receiving higher family allowances, those receiving disability allowance, those in special education establishments and those with special educational needs. Their accompanying persons and visitors are also entitled to free travel in the cases provided for by law.
8. In the future, large families who have already benefited from the large family travel allowance will also be exempted from the fare (large families=nagycsaládok, two parents with at least three children).
9. In the future, public servants will be entitled to a 50 percent discount for an unlimited number of trips, subject to registration.
10. The holders of a travel card for disabled persons will be entitled to an unlimited number of 50 percent discounted trips, as well as discounted country and county passes, according to a statement by the MÁV-Volán Group.
