Hungarian government aims to develop Pécs
A complex development programme for Hungary’s Southern Transdanubia region aims to reduce the disparity between levels of development in the north and south of the country, Tibor Navracsics, the minister of public administration and regional development, said on Saturday.
The aim is to offer assistance to regions in the south that “drifted to the margins of development” through no fault of their own, Navracsics said, addressing a celebration marking the 54th anniversary of the designation of the settlement of Dombóvár, in the southwest of the country, as a city. He added that Dombóvár had found the ambition to take “a leading role” again.
He said that the city of Pécs, which ought to be the “centre of the region”, had lost ground in terms of its place in the country’s economy and cultural life.
