Surprising results: Hungarians want to travel to these destinations from Budapest Airport
The number of Chinese air connections is rapidly growing, but Hungarians refused to include Chinese cities in the top 5. Instead, they voted for US and Japanese cities.
Budflyer, a Hungarian Facebook page focusing on air travel news, initiated and conducted the online voting. According to the results, Hungarians would like to travel to the following destinations from the Hungarian capital:
1. New York
2. Tokyo
3. Bangkok
4. Miami
5. Chicago
The desire for a Budapest-New York flight is unquestionable. Furthermore, there were announcements about a direct flight to Bangkok, but nothing more happened than promises from Air Asia X. We covered that topic in THIS article.

There is no news about direct flights between Budapest and the USA. We regularly write that despite Wizz Air’s active expansion and the purchase of long-range Airbus A321XLR aircraft, the Hungarian budget airline plans to go to the East instead of the West, despite the Hungarian diaspora living in the USA.

So why has the Fidesz government arranged for all these flights to China and none to the US? Fidesz does not want Hungarians to go to the US because they regard the US as “the enemy” and China as “the friend.” Is that what Hungarians want? Fidesz wants you to turn into members of their “New World Order” where your friends are Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela and soon to come maybe will be direct flights to North Korea. Vote for them again in 2026 if that’s what you want.

If no US carrier picks up the New York route any time soon (which is possible as they don’t have the spare aircraft due to delivery delays) we might just see Wizz using a 321XLR for a direct service from BUD. The relatively short block times with no Russian airspace to avoid might just make it sensible as New York is an evergreen destination and will also attract inbound US tourists. I suspect they wouldn’t fly to JFK or EWR, rather Stewart International.

I’m guessing the flights to/from China are set up primarily to boost tourism from China to Hungary.
