Lukashenka sends his greetings to Orbán on State Foundation Day
Belarusian leader Aleksandr Lukashenka has extended his greetings to Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in honour of Hungary’s State Foundation Day.
According to Népszava, Lukashenka’s greetings were reported by the Belarusian state news agency, Belta. In his message to President Sulyok, Lukashenka emphasised that the foundation of cooperation between states is a steadfast commitment to mutual trust and respect. He highlighted that, in line with their constitutional norms and national interests, Minsk and Budapest have actively fostered bilateral cooperation over the years, benefiting both nations.
“As you correctly noted in your message to me, the main foundation on which cooperation between the states should be built is an absolute commitment to the principles of mutual trust and respect. It is in accordance with the fundamental constitutional norms and national interests that Minsk and Budapest have been actively developing bilateral interaction for the benefit of the peoples of our countries for many years already,” wrote Lukashenka in his message.
Regarding Hungary’s upcoming EU Presidency, Lukashenka expressed confidence that under Budapest’s leadership, significant issues like the protection of family values, traditional Christian principles, the preservation of international law, and fairness in international relations would return to the European agenda, as summarised by HVG.

In his message to Prime Minister Orbán, Lukashenka commended modern Hungary’s consistent pursuit of a peace-loving policy that serves the national interest. He stressed that despite international challenges, Minsk and Budapest remain committed to their principles, building mutually beneficial cooperation based on respect and shared perspectives on a wide range of issues.
Lukashenka also addressed the ongoing conflict in neighbouring Ukraine, reaffirming Belarus’s support for peace initiatives and stability in Europe. He expressed appreciation for Hungary’s significant role in European politics and its decisive actions toward peace. He concluded by wishing Hungary’s leaders good health, strength, and energy, and the Hungarian people happiness and prosperity. The head of state reaffirmed Belarus’ readiness for multifaceted cooperation on both the above-mentioned and other topics of mutual interest.
The Orbán government remains unique within the EU for its continued engagement with Belarus. In September 2023, Hungary was the only EU country to appoint a new ambassador to Minsk. Additionally, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has shown a keen interest in visiting Belarus. Meanwhile, Russian military forces have used Belarusian territory to launch attacks on Ukraine, and Vladimir Putin has stationed tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, recognizing Belarus’s supportive role in the war against Ukraine.

“Mutual trust and respect” between dictatorships. Where are the greetings of Kim Jong Un, the Ayatollah, Maduro, Ortega et al? “The Orban government remains unique within the EU for its’ continued engagement with Belarus” yes and with a lot of other bastard dictatorships. Very unique.
