Significant shift in Hungary’s weather: first snow on the horizon
Hungary has enjoyed an extended Indian summer this year. Aside from a brief cooler spell in September, the weather has remained mostly warm and dry. Even this weekend offers summer-like conditions for outdoor activities. However, a marked change is expected by Tuesday, with the first snow potentially arriving.
According to Tények, the news magazine of TV2, last October saw record-high temperatures, whereas this year’s temperatures have stayed closer to seasonal norms. Night-time lows are currently around 3–5°C, while daytime highs still reach approximately 15°C.
Tuesday will bring colder temperatures, strong winds, and increased precipitation. The KÅ‘szegi Mountains, in particular, are likely to experience especially cold conditions, and snowfall could occur in the area next week.
Experts at MCC’s Climate Policy Institute note that temperatures in the Carpathian Basin are rising faster than in surrounding regions due to global warming. They report that winters and summers are now warmer than ever here, particularly in December and January. Additionally, the number of summer-like days (when temperatures exceed 25°C) has significantly increased during both autumn and spring.
